About Milorni Nature Reserve

Milorni Nature Reserve encompasses over 10,000 acres of protected land located in the temperate rainforests of western Oregon. The reserve is characterized by dense stands of Douglas fir, western red cedar, and bigleaf maple, along with old-growth pockets that provide critical habitat for species such as the northern spotted owl and the Pacific fisher. The terrain features gentle river valleys, steep forested slopes, and a few small wetlands, creating diverse ecological niches. Established in 1987, the reserve was set aside to protect an important segment of the region's native forest and to provide a living laboratory for conservation research. Visitors to Milorni Nature Reserve enjoy opportunities for hiking on an extensive trail network, birdwatching, and seasonal stream-side fishing. The reserve also includes educational facilities to promote understanding of native ecology and conservation techniques. Key landmarks include the Milorni Creek Overlook, a vantage point offering panoramic views of the forest canopy, and the Whispering Pines Trail, known for interpretive signage about local flora and fauna. Due to its emphasis on preservation, visitor access is managed to minimize impact while allowing people to engage with nature through low-impact recreation. The reserve appeals to nature lovers, researchers, and families seeking tranquil outdoor experiences amid diverse habitats.
